Earlier this week, Microsoft and Meta announced that the Xbox Cloud Gaming app is now available for download and use on Meta Quest 2, 3, and Pro VR headsets. However, Microsoft also quietly added versions of its Word, Excel, and PowerPoint productivity apps to the Meta Quest store this week.
As reported by Android Central, you can download the Word, Excel, and PowerPoint apps from the store. It can be used by owners of the original Oculus Quest headset, as well as recent Meta Quest 2, 3, and Pro products. You need a Microsoft account to access these apps on these devices.
Android Central posted a quick video on YouTube showing Office apps working using the Meta Quest headset. It also shows how Word, Excel, and PowerPoint apps can be run in parallel while being viewed in a VR environment. These apps are designed to run in a mixed reality setting, so even when users are creating a document in Word, a spreadsheet in Excel, or a presentation in PowerPoint, , you can see the outside world.
The app can be controlled with virtual fingers through a headset, but you can also access it by connecting Meta Quest to a Bluetooth mouse and keyboard.
Back in October 2022, Microsoft and Meta collaborated to add Teams support to Meta Quest headsets, add an Outlook email app, integrate Microsoft Intune and Azure Active Directory support to headsets for enterprise users, and more. We announced other VR collaborations. With the introduction of Office apps to the Meta Quest store, we expect to see more Microsoft apps and features on Meta’s VR headsets.
Of course, Microsoft is also developing Office and Teams apps for Apple’s upcoming Vision Pro mixed reality headset. This $3,499 product is expected to be available in early 2024.
