NEW ORLEANS — The ReBokeh app uses your iPhone or iPad’s camera to change vision settings to help improve vision for people with moderate disabilities, according to Academy ’23 presenters.
“This is a very good option for patients who have sufficiently good and usable visual acuity and may not be suitable candidates for dedicated assistive technology, but who require extra assistance with their normal daily activities.” is.” Rebecca Rosenberg, MSE; ReBokeh founder and CEO told Healio.
Rosenberg designed the app to utilize, rather than replace, her existing vision after struggling to find assistive technology that met her needs as a child diagnosed with oculocutaneous albinism. . She named it after “bokeh,” a photographic technique in which a light source is blurred.
The app allows users to fully customize settings and adjust contrast, exposure, and color inversion, all of which can be saved as presets. The app can also zoom in on details, allowing users to see better from a distance.
Rosenberg shared how an albino user uses the ReBokeh app for personal travel, noting that it helped him read the ticketing board in Iceland.
“This is just one of the ways our technology can actually enable people to be independent,” she said.
The app is currently available for free on Apple iOS devices, but there is a waiting list for Android users. The premium version of the app requires a paid monthly subscription and offers additional features such as additional presets, the ability to save images to your camera roll, and enhanced invert options.
