As you might expect, a significant number of teens are addicted to their phones, but Gen Z’s ranking of the top social apps may surprise you. According to a report from Pew Research Centerone-third of teenage respondents visited YouTube, TikTok, Snapchat, Instagram, or Facebook YouTube “almost always” has the largest share of this group.
Pew asked questions and compiled the research. 1,453 respondents Children born after 2010 are considered part of Generation Alpha, so this is the last year that surveys of teenagers can fully represent Gen Z culture.

According to Pew data, YouTube is used by 30% more U.S. teens than TikTok. But on a different scale, the ByteDance-owned app showed the true nature of its influence. As expected, TikTok’s addictive algorithm persuades young users to keep scrolling, even if other platforms boast higher numbers in terms of reach.
Pew’s findings are broken down by gender, race, and ethnicity. More women than men report being active “almost always” on the three major short-form video apps (TikTok, Instagram, and Snapchat). On YouTube, on the other hand, more men than women reported higher levels of usage. Additionally, TikTok, YouTube, and Instagram have more or less consistent usage rates among Black and Hispanic teens compared to the typical 13- to 17-year-old demographic.
