Earthquakes in Turkey and Syria: Powerful earthquakes occurred in Turkey and Syria in February. The first magnitude 7.8 quake occurred at 4:15 a.m., followed by a second magnitude 7.5 quake at 1:24 p.m., causing a number of strong aftershocks that caused buildings to collapse. The devastating impact killed 59,000 people in Turkey and 8,000 in Syria. (AFP)
