MARQUETTE — A number of Northern Michigan University’s female track and field athletes placed first and second place indoors at the Wisconsin-Oshkosh Early Bird Open on Saturday, led by junior Leah Root, who had two wins in the field competition. Started the season.
Root won the pole vault with a jump of 3.50 meters (11 feet 5 3/4 inches) and also won the triple jump with a jump of 11.12 meters (36-5 3/4 inches).
Teammate Katie Smith was runner-up in the pole vault with over 3.35 meters (10-11 7/8).
Marquette High School graduate Beau Truckee won the 60-meter dash in 7.92 seconds, followed by sophomore teammate Jativya Williams in 7.94 seconds.
Sophomore Beverly Harper won the mile in 5:33.97, bouncing back from third place on the final split to win, and Escanaba sophomore Ciara Ostrenga won the 400 in 1:00.24. It came in second place.
NMU was the only athlete to compete in the 60 hurdles, with freshman Sophie Diop winning with a 9.12, junior Ahna Larson second with a 9.62, and junior Sydney Romps runner-up with a 9.85.
Diop was also runner-up in the long jump with a jump of 5.45 meters (17-10 1/2), followed by Negaunee native Taron Prussi in the 3,000, Emme Barrow in the 60 and Lana Mack in the 3,000. Finished in meters. miles.
The NMU quartet placed second and third in the 4×400 relay. The second place group included Truckee, Williams, Mack and Eva Csonka with a time of 4:15.11, and the third place group included Larson, Romps, Natalie Pisoke and Amelia Kassian with a time of 4:18.96.
After a six-week open season, the Wildcats will return to the course on January 20th in Kenosha, Wisconsin at the Lake Michigan Open hosted by Wisconsin Parkside.
