Humble, Texas – A special education teacher has resigned from the Humble Independent School District after being accused of giving melatoning gummies to several students at Pine Forest Elementary School.
District officials said they began an investigation after receiving information about the teacher’s conduct in late September.
During the investigation, the school district learned that the teacher “was handing out melatoning gummies on his own without the permission of parents.”
The district said the teacher did not notify campus administrators or nurses about his actions.
“Did she bring melatonin from home?” asked Nia Moreno, whose son was given melatonin gummies. “I don’t know what was in it other than melatonin.”
Moreno said she had more questions than answers after being told about the incident.
She remembers when she picked up her 5-year-old early from school this school year and the paraprofessional told her he had woken her up from a nap.
“One of the paraprofessionals said, ‘Oh, he’s kind of grumpy because he actually fell asleep, but since you’re here I had to wake him up.'” “Oh, okay.” “It was like,” Moreno recalled. But now that she has learned about melatonin, her perspective has changed.
“For me, that one time was the only sign I got. They never said he took a nap,” she said. “Honestly, I don’t know how many times he took it. He may have taken it more than once.”
The school district reported the teacher to the State Board of Educator Certification, the Department of Child Protective Services, and police. It is unclear what charges, if any, she will face.
The principal at Pine Forest Elementary School called the parents of all the students in the teacher’s class and said all the students were doing well.
The school district said the teacher had not been in the classroom since the incident was reported in late September.
