If a driver or passenger has a gun, there is a right and wrong way to call the police.
A man who set up a highly visible incident in downtown Taylor on Thursday afternoon apparently did it the wrong way, leading many passersby to believe there was a major police incident going on and attracting unwanted attention. Collected.
Witnesses reported a police sniper was near the Walmart Supercenter at 7555 Telegraph Road around noon, and Taylor police were blocking traffic toward the store.
The incident stemmed from a traffic stop for a simple violation.
When the officer who conducted the traffic stop approached the vehicle, the officer yelled that the occupant had a gun in his lap, said Carl Ziomek, director of communications for the city of Taylor.
“The officer then proceeded to proceed from a routine traffic stop and conduct what is known as a felony stop, where the officer directs the occupants of the vehicle at gunpoint to exit the vehicle,” Ziomek said. “After taking the occupant into custody, it was determined that he was the legal owner of the firearm and had a valid license to carry it.”
The man was issued a traffic ticket and released, but received a warning from police.
“They discussed the proper way to notify police that they were authorized and armed,” Ziomek said.
