There has been a huge debate in Texas over the past few years about the pros and cons of self-checkout systems at Walmart and other stores. One side says it will destroy jobs. My opponent says this is the best ever. If you follow the complaints on social media, Walmart is the biggest user of self-checkout. Other companies have also decided to add some self-checkout lanes like Brookshire’s. Is this retail trend coming to an end? I don’t think so, but the New Mexico experiment may change the use of self-checkout.
new mexico experiment
In October of this year, three Walmart stores in New Mexico decided to eliminate self-checkout systems and return to face-to-face checkout with cashiers. A lot of people complain about self-checkout, and just as many people complain about this switch. Several Walmart customers told TV station KRQE in Albuquerque, New Mexico, that they didn’t want to wait in line for 15 minutes to check out three or four items.
Will this experiment be conducted in Texas?
To be honest, I don’t know. Check out the Walmart on South Broadway in Tyler. They completely revamped their checkout system a while ago. There are many self-checkout options. However, there are also real checkers within these self-checkout areas. When I’ve been there I’ve seen a lot of people using both. No, I don’t think Walmart prohibits self-checkout at any of its Tyler Walmart stores. That doesn’t mean they won’t experiment elsewhere in Texas.
I love self-checkout
I like this because I don’t usually have a full basket of things when I go shopping. On rare occasions, you may find a real cashier and check out there. Otherwise, use self-checkout. It’s quick and easy.
jobs are not gone
Being a cashier isn’t the only job you can do at Walmart. They include ushers, stockers, cleaners, managers, and more. For curbside pickup, you must hire someone to collect your online orders, bag them, and load them into your car. The truth is that jobs haven’t disappeared, they’ve just moved on to something else because of modern commerce.
conclusion
It’s certainly an interesting discussion about the pros and cons of self-checkout. Use it, don’t use it. If a store is 100% self-checkout, you have two choices: shop there and use the self-checkout, or don’t shop there. Businesses do what they think is best for the business and brings the most profit. No matter how much someone screams about it on social media, they will.

The Second Amendment is very important to Texans. However, there is a good chance that Texas will follow in the footsteps of other states and take away guns from residents who violate certain laws.
