NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) – Hanukkah festivities are well underway across the country, including in Nashville. As in recent years, safety is a top priority for organizers.
The holiday comes at a time when the war between Israel and Hamas is escalating and anti-Semitism is on the rise.
Despite that reality, organizers are determined to commemorate the rededication of the sacred temple, even if it means implementing various safety measures such as armed security, surveillance cameras, and keycard door locks. I am determined to proceed with the event. It’s a must-have item.
“It’s sad both that we need it and especially that we have to put so many resources into it,” said Deborah Oleshansky of the Jewish Federation of Greater Nashville. ” he said. “We can provide other types of services and be involved in the community in other ways, but the sad reality of our world is that we have to put a lot of resources into these times. ”
Organizers are also working with Metro Nashville Police, and WSMV4 witnessed police patrolling the grounds of the Gordon Jewish Community Center Thursday night.
In a statement to WSMV, they told us: “MNPD has been and continues to be in contact with Jewish leaders and Jewish organizations in the city to ensure the safety of everyone. Public safety is paramount, and we fulfill that mission in many ways, including being visible.”
