The Bangor Police Department has introduced a new app that allows the public to provide information anonymously.
The department announced Thursday afternoon an app called Bangor PD, available from the Apple Store and Google Play. Download is free.
The app allows users to submit anonymous information to the department, including photos and videos, said Sgt. Jason McAmbry, spokesperson for the department. He says users will also receive crime alerts and community notifications, such as storm warnings, parking bans, and emergencies.
McAmbry said the app is another way for Bangor police to gather valuable information from the public, allowing the department to communicate more effectively with the public. The project has been in the works for over a year, but it took some time to find the right developer and price.
“This app will be useful for interactions in emergency situations, such as when police need to inform the public about an active shooter situation,” he said. “It’s more reliable than social media because people get factual information. The turnaround is very quick, which is important.”
McAmbry said the app allows users to communicate with police in real time. Police officers can respond to calls, but the person making the call remains anonymous.
“I don’t know who you’re sending the message to, but I’m sure they’ll respond if they feel like it,” he said.
Users must create an account when downloading the app. You’ll be asked to enter your email address, postal code, password, and you can choose the types of alerts you want to receive.
When submitting an anonymous tip, users must enter a subject, location, and description. You will be given the option to attach multiple photos and videos.
Even if Bangor residents and other users don’t want to use the app to submit information to police, they’re likely to find the alerts helpful, McAmbry said. The app also provides the department’s phone number and directs users to its website and social media pages.
“It’s what everyone is doing,” he said of the app’s release. “It’s easy. It’s easy. It’s anonymous. And it’s efficient.”
