It takes a real Grinch to pull off a heist during a charity event, but a brazen woman did just that, attempting to steal more than $700 worth of stuff from a Walmart in the Howell area.
Woman attempts to steal from Walmart with 75 police officers inside
The incident happened last weekend at a Walmart in Livingston County near Howell. Michigan State Police troopers participated in the annual “Shop With a Cop” event, which helps needy children shop for themselves and their families.
Michigan State Police Lt. Rene Gonzalez told Detroit’s WJBK-TV that officers were at the store with lights and sirens to welcome children to the event. .
“We take kids to the store who might not have had a good Christmas,” Gonzalez said. “They receive a $100, sometimes $150 gift card to go shopping with their families.”
Theft in front of the police
Gonzalez said the 62-year-old woman loaded a cart with all kinds of items and left the store, ignoring the clerk who tried to look at her receipt.
She arrived at the parking lot and loaded approximately $730 worth of merchandise into her car, which ironically was parked right next to a police cruiser.
Gonzalez said one of the officers had to temporarily abandon his small shopping companion to arrest the woman.
“I have to say I was surprised because when I was driving my patrol car, people slowed down,” he said. “When you see 75 police officers in the store, I don’t know if they probably thought we were too busy.”
The woman was taken to the Livingston County Jail, and officers were then able to return to the store and finish the event.
