Two Chelsea Public Schools administrators, Chelsea High School Principal Obed Morales and Sokolowski Elementary School Assistant Principal Camilo Machado, received the Latino Education Award.
Outstanding Latino Educator Award. Both were recognized as visionary leaders and champions for Latinx students at Chelsea. Chelsea School Committee member Janet Velez also received the “Exceptional Latina Educator Award” for her work not only in Chelsea but also in Everett Public Schools.
Superintendent Dr. Almi G. Abeyta was surprised to be recognized in person as the recipient of the inaugural 2021 La Lucha Award from Latino Educators. Two years ago, the award was presented to her in a virtual ceremony. State Representative Judith Garcia addressed Dr. Abeyta about her accomplishments and presented her with flowers. The La Lucha Award was presented to Dr. Abeyta for his continued advocacy for Chelsea’s Latino students and their families and for his fight for an equitable education for Chelsea Public Schools students.
Dr. Abeyta was also on hand to present the Educator Diversity Champion Award to State Senator Sal DiDomenico.
At last week’s Chelsea School Committee meeting, Obed Morales, Camilo Machado and Janet Velez were presented with certificates, including the awards they earned.
