As we unite to say goodbye to 2023, it’s time to discuss the year’s highs and lows when it comes to online shopping.
Most of us think Amazon is the biggest and most popular platform for this endeavor, but App Intelligence statistics proved otherwise. It hasn’t been a great year for the e-commerce giant in terms of user downloads. Perhaps one of the reasons could be related to the fact that most people already carry it around with them.
Another reason for the trend could be the fact that there is now more competition. And that seems like a more reasonable explanation.
We witnessed the end of two big shopping events that most of us have been waiting for all year long. The first is Black Friday, which is sure to increase sales, and the second is Cyber Monday, which attracts thousands of users from all over the world.
Both events give great insight into which shopping platforms were able to capture the attention of users. If you think it’s Amazon, it’s not.
Based on our analysis, the biggest online shopping apps in America are definitely Amazon, Temu, SHEIN, and Walmart. And some were marketing harder than others.
Comparing the statistics for November this year with those for the same month in the past, we achieved a 6% increase in downloads overall.
Looking across shopping categories, sales are down significantly this year, according to the latest figures from the Mobile Download Index, a clear sign. However, not all platforms experienced similar growth.
It’s interesting how Amazon managed to take the last place in November if new download numbers are to be taken into account. According to estimates, the retail giant had just 1.8 million installs, which came as a surprise to many. But Amazon’s misery didn’t end there. The platform experienced a staggering 27% decline.
Going up, we see Walmart move into third place with a whopping 2.5 million installs after achieving 40% growth last month. And despite the surge, Walmart’s download numbers fell by nearly 2% compared to last November.
What is the reason? Well, we’ll shed some light on why as we dig deeper into other results. This will make it clearer what the conclusions are on this front.
SHEIN took the number 2 spot in terms of user base with 2.8 million customers in the US alone. However, unlike other competitors in the same space, the number of downloads also recorded a significant increase of 26% compared to the statistics for the same period last year. This may be another big reason why the company is transforming into a public entity sooner or later.
The first person to take over the crown was Tem. This popular shopping platform has taken the nation by storm thanks to its crazy advertising campaigns and frequently ranks at the top of the App Store and Google Play Store.
Temu witnessed nearly 7.2 million installations across the United States in November alone. This is a staggering 16% increase compared to what was seen in the same month in 2022.
And in case you happened to crunch the numbers in your head, the number of downloads was significantly higher than all three major online shopping apps combined. Do you think this is a big improvement?
Now the question is how or why major retail giants, including Amazon and Walmart, have failed to find success during the brightest time of the year. It cannot be linked to advertising spending as all businesses can participate in it. What we see here is how it relates to price.
Temu’s products are very cost-effective and are worth every penny, according to the reviews we’ve received from users so far. Therefore, people are willing to take risks and get the most out of a very cheap product.
The same thing has to do with SHEIN, who came in the same boat for exactly the same reasons. The low price and excellent quality attract many people, plus great reviews.
And as we see the world taking on huge debts and fighting inflation, people would rather buy now and pay later with a credit card. And when things are cheap, why not take advantage of that very special kind of offer? Remember, the greater the savings, the happier the shopping customer will be.
