Walmart Inc. announced that its online marketplace had its best two days of sales to date during the Cyber5 holiday shopping period. The retailer said Black Friday and Cyber Monday were its two biggest sales days, without providing details. At the time, millions of consumers reportedly shopped on the website.
Walmart announced that the 2023 Cyber 5 sales period (the five days from Thanksgiving to Cyber Monday) exceeded the 2022 level. The retailer said the peak number of orders per minute was four times higher than the previous peak on Black Friday.
Walmart is No. 2 in the Digital Commerce 360 Database Top 1000 ranking of North American online retailers by web sales. The retailer is also ranked 9th in the Global Online Marketplace Database, Digital Commerce 360’s Top 100 Online Marketplaces ranking.
Cyber 5 results on Walmart Marketplace
Despite increasing sales, Walmart’s share of total visitors to the US Sales to the top 1,000 retailers during Cyber 5 were down 2.2% compared to the comparable 2022 holiday period. Analyzing data from Similar Webs with Digital Commerce 360, Walmart received 6.8% of its U.S. traffic to these retailers via Cyber5, which was down 2.2% year-over-year. According to SimilarWeb, Walmart saw a 10% drop in website visitors on Black Friday compared to 2022. Samelikeweb tracks visits, not page views.
“Walmart’s market is still in a relatively early stage, so it’s not surprising that it’s growing so quickly,” said Neil Saunders, managing director at retail analytics firm GlobalData. “But much of the growth is to be expected, as Walmart has made a concerted effort to improve the feel of the site and attract more vendors. Also, to improve its success on the site, , and working more closely with vendors. We’re seeing Walmart become a more dominant force in this space, but it’s still far behind Amazon.”
Walmart Fulfillment Services (WFS) also recorded a milestone. The number of units shipped on Black Friday nearly doubled compared to the same day in 2022.Walmart said it had four days of record trading volume. The retailer expanded its logistics department earlier this year. We announced that sellers can now ship large and bulky items through WFS. This also applies to products that come in multiple boxes, such as patio sets. Products shipped using WFS include Online “Fulfilled by Walmart” tag. Walmart previously said the tag drives conversions and increases GMV (gross merchandise value) by an average of 50% when sellers switch to WFS.
Walmart started its holiday sale this October. holiday kickoff sale, It coincided with rival Amazon.com’s Big Deal Day. After that, holiday sales were held from November 8th to 14th and November 22nd to 27th.
How big is Walmart’s online marketplace?
Although Walmart’s online marketplace remains small compared to Amazon’s behemoth, the retailer is aiming for growth. We operate as a hybrid marketplace, selling products directly from Walmart and products from third-party sellers. In 2022, the most recent year for which data is available, Walmart had 155,000 third-party sellers. This is just a fraction of Amazon’s 1.9 million sellers.
According to Digital Commerce 360 research, Walmart recorded a GMV of $118.6 billion in 2022. In 2022, less than a third (27.5%) of his GMV was from third-party sellers.
But Walmart is attracting new sellers to its marketplace and touting the success of sellers already using its platform. Approximately 40% of orders placed through Cyber5 on Walmart Marketplace included items from small and medium-sized businesses. Thousands of sellers reported record sales during this period, and thousands more made their first sales. Walmart also claims that more sellers are adopting services including WFS without sharing.
Walmart accounts for a smaller portion of online retailer Mable Furniture’s sales than other channels, said Rav Michalowski, the company’s president. Meble’s highest sales channel is Wayfair Inc., followed by Amazon, MebleFurniture.com, and Overstock (now Bed Bath & Beyond) with similar shares. Walmart’s sales are still “slightly lower” than other websites, he said.
