Anthony Protomanni of store #1095 in Vaughan, Ontario, doesn’t let obstacles get in the way of achieving his ambitions. Anthony was born with a physical disability and uses a wheelchair to help him get around, but that’s not all he has.
Anthony is an avid sports fan, competing in para-ice hockey and basketball leagues for many years, and has been a beloved member of the 1095 Walmart team for over six years. He gradually worked his way up from part-time usher to self-employed cashier, compliance associate, and now works in the store’s accounting office.
“What I remember most about working at Walmart is that it’s a place where you never feel forgotten,” Anthony said. “From the moment I joined the store in 2017, I remember feeling so welcomed by everyone, and I always look forward to interacting with the employees when I come to work.”
Anthony says each role has presented him with new challenges, inspired him to learn new skills and develop his career. His most memorable moment at Walmart was when his store manager, Michelle Enroth, lowered the self-checkout counter so his wheelchair could fit snugly and he could continue to assist customers. It was when
“We value the strengths and abilities that our employees bring to our teams and believe that it makes us better as a whole,” Michelle says. “Our mission is to make Walmart a workplace where everyone can thrive, regardless of their visible or invisible disabilities.”
December 3rdrd This day is International Day of Persons with Disabilities and when we asked Anthony what this day meant to him, he said: Doesn’t have a big impact. I always try to prove to others that just because I have a disability doesn’t mean I’m not smart or capable. If you have the will to work hard, you can overcome any wall. ”
