ATLANTA—Advent begins Sunday, Dec. 3, marking the beginning of a new liturgical year. The season of Advent, symbolized by the color purple, includes his four Sundays and weekdays leading up to Christmas.

From penitential services to programs of lessons and carols, below is a sample of upcoming events to commemorate this season of reflection.
Advent lessons and carols: Saturday, December 2nd. 7 p.m., St. Michael the Archangel Church, 490 Arnold Mill Rd, Woodstock. All are welcome to join us for this evening of Bible and song. Afterward, enjoy a cookie reception at the Family Center. Admission fee is 1 dozen cookies.
Men’s Advent Evening: Tuesday, December 5th. 5:30pm-9pm, Ignatius House Jesuit Retreat Center, 6700 Riverside Dr., Sandy Springs. A Night of Reflection is directed by Jim Fleming (SJ). Join us tonight as we prepare to celebrate the miraculous birth of Jesus and prepare for a meaningful Advent. Dinner will be served at 5:30 and the formal reflection session will begin at 6:30. Discover or rediscover ways to pray, including imaginative prayers, centered prayers, and peaceful meditations that incorporate seasonal stories from the Bible. Advent Day of Reflection: Wednesday, December 6th. From 9am to 3pm. Ignatius House Jesuit Retreat Center, 6700 Riverside Dr., Sandy Springs. Directed by Andy and Sarah Otto. Come to Ignatius House for a day of prayer and reflection. Refreshment for both body and mind awaits. Your retreat director will lead you in prayer and meditation on this Advent day of reflection, offering sacred words for pondering. Check-in begins at 8:30 AM and includes a light breakfast. ST. Luke Cookie Walk: Friday, Dec. 8, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, December 9pm, 10am-7pm St. Luke’s Church, 91 N. Park St, Dahlonega. Buy a Christmas tin for $12 and fill it with delicious homemade cookies. We also offer ready-made platters.
Archdiocesan Choir Advent Program: Friday, December 15th. 7:30 PM; St. Andrew’s Church, 635 Riverside Dr., Roswell. This program of lessons and carols is presented by the archdiocesan choir representing many dioceses. The choir is led by Donal Noonan, conductor of the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception. Mary Queen Lessons and Carols: Friday, Dec. 15, 7 p.m. Mary Our Queen Church, 6260 The Corners Parkway, Peachtree Corners. This Bible passage tells of the fall of mankind, the promise of a Messiah, and the expectation of the birth of Christ. Each lesson is followed by a choral piece, soloist, or congregational carol that helps everyone ponder the Bible’s message. The service will feature MOQ’s adult choir, scholastic choir and youth choir, accompanied by the organist and his MOQ instrumental ensemble. Anyone can participate for free.
