privet,
Do you know why we toast? Ancient Romans drank wine with toasts for good health.
The ancient Romans followed the custom of placing toasted bread in their wine glasses to reduce the flavor and texture of bad wine.
The charcoal in the burnt toast absorbs some of the acidity and flavor of the wine, enhancing the overall flavor of the wine. This custom also influenced the custom of toasting “to celebrate someone’s health.”
Interestingly, the Romans believed that wine aided digestion, circulation, and sleep. Aged wine was considered particularly beneficial, and wine was sometimes given to cattle to treat certain types of cattle ailments.
Did you know that my day off starts today? 😂 I think so! If you just subscribed, hello and see you next week. My lovely colleagues Bol and Chimgojirim will be filling in for me until I return.

Egypt’s Nawa Scientific to expand to other African countries
Nawah Scientific, Egypt’s cloud lab for scientific services, recently became the first facility in Africa to be certified by the United States Food and Drug Administration (US-FDA) for food safety and analysis.
This accreditation, previously granted to European companies, allows Nawah Scientific to utilize one or more analytical techniques to perform food testing under this subpart under the Food Analysis Program’s relevant laboratory accreditation requirements. I certify that I have complied with all of the following.
CEO Omar Saqr said the certification would cut costs in half and reduce analysis time by nine-tenths for Egyptian exports that require sample analysis abroad.
The startup, which specializes in research and scientific analysis, plans to enter several key African markets, including South Africa and Nigeria.
Founded in 2015, Nawah Scientific provides companies and researchers with the latest scientific tools through an online platform, allowing them to perform complex laboratory experiments remotely.
The company raised $1 million in 2021 to increase its traction in the petrochemical, food and agriculture sectors.
Zoom out: 54Gene was a thriving research startup in 2020, but ceased operations in 2023.
When 54gene was founded in 2019, its goal was to fill a gap in the global genomics market where less than 3% of genetic material used in pharmaceutical research comes from Africa. Its main purpose was to use genomic data to help researchers create treatments specific to African genetics.
After the closure, co-founder Abasi Ene Obong announced that he would launch a genomics company, Syndicate Bio, in 2023.
MultiChoice launches GOtv Stream app in Nigeria
MultiChoice will launch its GOtv Stream app in Nigeria on December 1, 2023, nearly two weeks after announcing the revamped Showmax platform that will debut in February 2024.
According to MultiChoice West Africa Executive Head of Corporate, Caroline Oguma, the new platform will improve the experience for viewers and enable them to get the most out of their monthly subscriptions.
If you ask me, GOtv has evolved from a decoder to a streaming service that allows users to watch their favorite TV series, movies, and other content on their computers, tablets, smartphones, and other gadgets.
Similar to Netflix and Showmax, users can set up profiles, download content for specific devices, and customize the viewing experience for each family member.
In addition to live TV channels, you also have access to package-related catch-up content and a selection of your package’s channels available on-demand. The GOtv Stream app is free to download on the Play Store and Apple app. Store and use, but users need an internet connection to watch or stream content.
