ALBERTVILLE – Albertville High School Theater won the Best in Show award at the recent Walter Trumbauer Competition for its performance of “The Fifth Son.” The play will now move forward to the state festival in December.
“I couldn’t be more proud of each of my students who competed, and I’m so excited to be able to perform their bilingual play ‘The Fifth Son’ (El Quinto Sol) at the state level,” said Sarah Argillo, drama teacher at Albertville High School. “I’m working on it,” he said.
This is the first time in Aggie Theater history that a competition play has been moved to the state level. More than half of her 30 students who competed in the individual events advanced to compete at the state level.
Argillo said this is a huge accomplishment for any school, but even more so considering the majority of Aggie Theater students are completely new to theater.
“To my knowledge, this is the first time a bilingual play has been performed at this prestigious event,” Argillo said. “Theatre has the power to bridge the gap between diverse communities and cultures. Our theater does just that, and we are so proud of the dedication, tenacity and talent of our students.”
In addition to Best Picture, Albertville won Best Set, Best Costume, Best Technical, All-Star Cast (Ricardo Larios Lorenzo and Micaela Reynosa), and Best Supporting Cast (Lily). H. Alarcón).
Thirty-one of the 33 students had never competed in Trumbau before, but by the end of the day, all of them had won medals in their individual events. Twenty students were selected to compete in the state fair.

Alarcon, Sheila Alvarez, Kevin Robinson, Michaela Reynoso, Belsay Merino, Ricardo Larios Lorenzo, Cassondra Smith, Callie Johnson, Cadence Mason, Lisbeth Rodriguez, Margarita Francisco Pedro, Gabriel Desteen, Manuel Mandujano, Merari Guillermo, Katarina Thomas, Abby Brown, Nahisa Celestin, Addie Eason. Jennifer Wiley won her two medical excellence awards: Intermediate in Musical Drama and Intermediate in Performance Drama.
The Walter Trumbauer Festival has provided high-quality training and performance opportunities for Alabama theater students at the high school level since 1940. The festival consists of 30 individual events, a one-act play festival, and a studio theater one-act play festival, all for her 9th grade students. 12. We also hold special student auditions and university selection for high school seniors.
Students qualify for the state competition by earning superior ratings at one of seven district festivals. The state-level competition is the largest theatrical event in the state and will be held at the University of North Alabama on December 1st and 2nd. More than 2,000 high school theater students compete at the festival each year.
Junior Aggie Theater Presents “A Midsummer Night’s Settlement”
The community is invited to watch Junior Aggie Theater’s production of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.” The performance will be held at the Albertville Fine Arts Center on December 15th at 6pm. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students and will be sold at the door.
Aggie Theater holds auditions for “Chicago”
