Four people were shot and killed at a Walmart in Beavercreek, Ohio, on Monday night when a man opened fire as he entered, police in suburban Dayton said.
Beavercreek police said three of the victims were in critical condition, and a fourth victim suffered non-life-threatening injuries. said in an update Tuesday morning.
Police first received a call shortly after 8:36 p.m. about a man walking into Walmart with a rifle. The suspect then opened fire during the 911 call, Acting Chief Chad Lindsey said at a news conference Tuesday afternoon.
Police arrived within three minutes of the 911 call, and within five minutes the gunman was found dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Police said the officers did not fire any shots.
The suspect, an unidentified 20-year-old man, shot and killed three women and one man. Police say the victim’s condition is “steadily improving.”
Zlinka Dilbar, special agent in charge of the FBI’s Cincinnati field office, said the FBI is investigating the shooter’s background and motives.
Dilber said it was still early in the investigation process and urged the public to help by calling the FBI with tips.
“We are saddened by what happened at our Beavercreek, Ohio, store,” Walmart said in a statement. “The matter remains evolving and we are working closely with law enforcement on scene.”
Police say they are searching for suspects in Alaska after two people were shot to death in front of a South Anchorage Walmart on Sunday night.
Police found the bodies of a man and a woman in the back of two trucks in a parking lot near the store’s entrance. Police said in a statement late Sunday night that a firearm was also recovered.
Police provided few other details but said they believed it was an isolated incident.
