Survey highlights data and ethical implementation as top priorities as managers embrace the potential of AI
Reston, Virginia, October 10, 2023 /PRNewswire/ — A new report released by Ellucian, a leading provider of higher education technology solutions, finds that despite the perceived benefits of artificial intelligence (AI), its use in higher education is less than recognized. Key findings:
- Although 60% of administrators claim their institution uses AI capabilities, less than a third of higher education professionals have experience using AI in their work.
- About half of respondents expect the positive effects of AI to extend to the student experience, from improved student life support to improved student outcomes at their institutions.
- Almost 48% of respondents said they have yet to leverage AI in a personal or professional capacity.
- 30% of staff report “high” or “extensive” use of data analytics and data-driven decision-making.
- Key barriers to AI adoption include data security concerns, the need for AI training programs, and ethical implications.
- We identified three business functions across higher education that could benefit most from AI integration: institutional research and analytics, and admissions and advising.
- Less than a third of institutions have begun discussing the ethical implications of AI in higher education.

About the survey method
Ellucian conducted the following research. June 22nd – August 9, 2023 It was selected from a national sample of 1,140 higher education administrators from 768 institutions, ensuring broad representation across a variety of institution types, sizes, and job functions. Thirty-six percent of respondents were from private four-year institutions, 33% were from public four-year institutions, 29% were from public two-year institutions, and 2% were from “other” institutions. The sample also reflects a wide range of institution sizes based on student population. 40% were schools with 1,001 to 4,999 students, 22% were schools with 5,000 to 9,000 students, 16% were schools with 10,000 to 19,999 students, and 12% were schools. 9% of schools had more than 20,000 students, and 9% had fewer than 1,000 students. 33% of respondents work in information technology at an educational institution, 16% in financial aid, 16% in business services, 9% in enrollment management, 4% in advancement, 2% in student success, and 21 % self-selected as ‘Other’. . ”
