PROVO, Utah — BYU men’s swimmers won three individual events, three relay events and broke two additional school records as competition concluded Friday at the Mizzou Invitational in Columbia, Missouri.
For the second time in three days, Brad Prolo broke his own school record in the 200 fly. The fourth-year native from San Clemente, Calif., ran his personal best time of 1:41.80 to beat host Missouri’s Jan Zubic for the win. With Friday night’s performance, Prolo is currently ranked No. 4 nationally in the 200 fly, ahead of No. 1 Arizona State’s Alex Colson.
Jordan Tiffany recorded the program’s second-fastest time in the 100 free, winning her third individual event of the tournament. Tiffany hit the wall in 42.60 seconds, 0.4 seconds ahead of second-place finisher Grant Bochenski of Missouri. Tiffany surpassed Stanford’s Andres Dupont in the 100 free for sixth place nationally, joining Peyton Sorenson as the second athletes in program history to run under 43 seconds.
Freshman Joshua Reed placed fourth with a personal best score of 43.52, joining Tiffany in the top five. Reed tied for seventh all-time with Brigham Harrison (2023) and debuted on the 100 free top-10 board.
Darwin Anderson and Abraham Barragan placed first and second, respectively, in the 1650 free. Anderson finished more than 11 seconds ahead of third-place finisher Aaron Willms (TCU), and Barragan finished the same in fourth place. Anderson (4th) and Barragan (5th) jumped ahead of Army’s Clayton Bernauer on Friday to rank among the top five in the nation in the event.
The Cougars finished off a strong night with their third relay win of the tournament. Luigi Riva, Abraham Zimmerman, Reed and Tiffany teamed up to run the 400 free relay in a time of 2:52.27. The foursome shaved five seconds off their entrance time, beating Missouri State by 0.97 seconds. His 400 free relay team at BYU currently ranks his fifth in the nation ahead of teams from Indiana, Pitt and Florida.
Although Emerson Edwards fell short of winning the 200m chest final, he set a new school record time of 1:55.85 in the preliminaries. Edwards shaved nearly a third of a second off his previous personal best, surpassing Olympian Josue Dominguez’s record of 1:55.97 set in 2019.
BYU swimmers will participate in a long course time trial at the Mizzou Aquatics Center on Saturday. Participating athletes will compete against the U.S. Olympic Trials time standard in hopes of qualifying for the June 2024 event at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, Indiana.
Men’s diving competition continued Friday at the SMU Invite in Dallas, Texas. Chase Hindmarsh and Mickey Strauss finished in the top 10 in the Cougars’ 1-meter final with scores of 299.35 and 266.60, respectively. The divers conclude their competition in Dallas on Saturday.
