Lanett City Schools will soon be adding extra precautions to school events. The board received a safety grant that will be used to purchase new metal detectors.
“We hope to have these metal detectors installed soon. So we are very excited about the top-notch technology used in these metal detectors,” said Lanett City Schools Superintendent Jennifer・Mr. Boyd stated during the meeting.
The $50,500 grant is Alabama Department of Education$30,000 of that grant will be used to install new metal detectors at school security checkpoints for sports days and other events.
“Safety is always our top priority. It’s not just a cliché,” Boyd said. “This is something we believe in constantly evaluating our practices…We are doing everything we can to ensure safety.”
Metal detectors will be used in conjunction with the district’s latest safety protocols for sporting events and other school functions. Boyd said he hopes to have it installed by the first home basketball game in December.
The grant was applied for by Athletic Director Clifford Storey. The school board has not disclosed how the remaining funds will be used.
The story also brought up the EPA Clean School Bus Grant to the board. The statewide grant is in its third round of funding and will fund the district’s purchase of an all-electric vehicle bus.
The EV buses will be equipped with air conditioning. The buses can travel 100 to 125 miles on a single battery charge, which Storey said is the longest range of any bus route in the area.
Storey said if electric buses win the subsidy, the district could save $16,000 to $20,000 per bus over three to five years.
Mr Storey said if the bid were successful, the current fleet of diesel buses, which are in good condition, would be maintained to transport students long distances to sporting events and other school trips.
