Dolly Parton and her husband Carl Thomas Dean have been together ever since they met outside a laundromat in 1964.
The couple married two years later, and while Parton has been in the spotlight throughout her illustrious career, her husband has avoided it.
In an upcoming episode of her Apple Music radio show, “What Would Dolly Do? Radio,” the “Jolene” singer reveals why she rarely sees Dean by her side on red carpets.
“Karl had never been in the spotlight and never wanted to be in it. He didn’t like it,” she said.
Parton explained that shortly after they got married, she and Dean went to an awards show together, but Dean swore he would never go again.
“When we first married the guy who was named BMI Song of the Year, early on he had one thing in mind with me, and he wanted to wear a tuxedo, tie and all I took my clothes off and came out and said, “Please don’t ever ask me to go, because I’m not going, go do something else,” the singer recalled. “I never asked him, and he never asked.”
Parton went on to say that Dean always gives her honest opinion about her music, even if he isn’t impressed with what she’s created.
“I’d done some stuff in the past, just a little bit of rock stuff, and he was like, ‘Okay, okay.’ He’s very honest,” she said. said. “We have a great relationship. If I don’t want an honest answer, I know I shouldn’t ask him.”
Parton also talked about her husband’s love for his favorite band, Led Zeppelin’s “Stairway to Heaven.” She recalled that she told him she was going to cover her 1971 song, but he told her not to do it.
“Years ago, I was covering some of these rock albums in a more bluegrass-country kind of way, and I told him I was doing ‘Stairway to Heaven.’ I don’t think it’s necessary,’ and I said what I was going to do,” Parton recalled.
Parton said she recorded the song anyway, but Dean wasn’t impressed.
“I played it for him and he said, ‘Okay.’ He said, ‘Is that really ‘Stairway to Heaven’ or ‘Stairway to Hell?'” ,” the singer said.
