SDSU dedicates this November to Native American Indian Heritage Month.
For over 30 years now, san diego state university celebrated Native American Indian Heritage Month in November. This celebration aims to remember the culture, traditions, and achievements of the original Native American communities.
SDSU is recognized as Kumeyaay land and is committed to honoring this month by planning special ceremonies and events for everyone. The theme for this year’s Native Heritage Month at SDSU is: Celebrate tribal sovereignty and identity.
Chris Medellin, director of the SDSU Native Resource Center and a first-generation student, said celebrating Native American Heritage Month is important to remember the presence of indigenous peoples and the importance of their role in communities. thinking about. His current research primarily focuses on Native American identity formation, issues of access to higher education, and decolonization methodologies.
“From a certain approach, I think these different heritage months and history months are really trying to honor the diversity that’s all around us every day,” Medellín said. “The mainstream public wants to approach things as if everyone is the same, and that’s probably not a very good approach. There are a lot of them and we need to really respect those things that make us unique.”
Each year, one of the most anticipated events during Native Heritage Month at SDSU is the traditional Nike 7 Native Night Basketball Game. Since November 2014, SDSU has partnered with Nike N7 as part of this month’s special celebration. For nearly a decade, the Aztec men’s basketball team has worn special turquoise uniforms as a symbol of solidarity with the Native American community.
The Aztecs will play the Long Beach State men’s basketball team at Viejas Arena on Nov. 14 at 7 p.m. Doors open at 5 p.m. for the event, which will feature a special ceremony and performance honoring the Native American community.
SDSU honors the Native American community in November, but other events are held throughout the year. This spring’s Native & Indigenous Research and Arts Symposium (NIRAS) serves as an academic exhibition of Native American research and art projects.
“SDSU is really proud of being a community-based university, and I think it’s because of these initiatives that we’re successful,” Medellin said. “We value the diversity of students and faculty who represent this university.”
