COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KKTV) – Organizers across the country are celebrating local veterans by hosting events that honor them. Here in Southern Colorado, you can expect events at Monument, Pueblo, and Colorado Springs.
Bob McLaughlin, executive director of the Mount Carmel Veterans Services Center, told 11 News there are about 400,000 veterans in Colorado, 100,000 of whom live in El Paso and Teller counties. Ta.
If you’re in the Monument area, the Monument’s Covered Treasures Bookstore is hosting a Veterans Day autograph session. It will feature author Walt Larimore and his book “At First Light: A True World War Story of A Hero, His Bravery and An Amazing Horse.”This event will take place from 1pm to 3pm
If you live in the Pueblo area, the Greater Pueblo Chamber of Commerce will be hosting the 22nd Annual Veterans Day Parade to honor the brave service members who fought for our nation’s freedom. It begins at 10 a.m. in Pueblo’s historic downtown.
The Mount Carmel Veterans Services Center is hosting a Quilt of Valor event. Mount Carmel will be awarding nine quilts. The ceremony honors veterans and wraps them in a quilted embrace. The event will be held at 11 a.m. at the center at 530 Communication Circle in Colorado Springs.
McLaughin told 11 News there is a mantra he always follows when helping fellow veterans.
“Here’s a quote from George Washington that we have on our front desk that basically says, “The willingness of young people to serve our country further depends on how our country treats its veterans.” “It depends on how you handle it,” McLaughin said. “We do this every day at Mount Carmel to make sure our veterans are treated well and cared for.”
McLaughin told 11 News that although today is Veterans Day, veterans should be celebrated year-round.
“We serve our veterans every day. For our country to recognize the service and sacrifice of our veterans, it is important that people are able to say thank you and that veterans do not ask for recognition.
