milwaukee – Communities and organizations across southeastern Wisconsin will hold events this Veterans Day weekend to honor those who have served in the military.
Below are some of the events and ceremonies offered, both free and ticketed.
From Friday through Sunday, all active military, veterans, and their families (up to six people) receive free admission to the Harley-Davidson Museum. Veterans and active military members can also receive one free meal (up to $12.95 with drink purchase) at MOTOR Bar & Restaurant, located across the street from the museum. The Harley-Davidson Shop will be offering his 20% discount all weekend long for all active military and veterans. For more information, please visit the museum’s website.
New Berlin Veterans Day Ceremony
Mayor Dave Ament will lead the city’s annual Veterans Day ceremony Friday at 7 p.m. in the council chambers of New Berlin City Hall. The New Berlin Community Band will also perform at the ceremony.
Veterans Day Silver Circle 5K and 10K
Hundreds of people run through Veterans Park on Milwaukee’s lakefront. Organizers say this is the only race that starts and finishes on Mason Street in front of the Milwaukee County War Memorial Center. This year’s race, in partnership with the Silver Circle Foundation, will raise funds for Operation Final Home, which builds custom, loan-free homes for veterans and their families.
The Wisconsin Sons of the American Revolution Color Guard will honor veterans at 10:45 a.m. Saturday at Veterans Park in Waukesha. The color guard will also gather at Delafield Revolutionary War Flag Square at 1 p.m. to dedicate the planting of the Liberty Tree.
Walworth County American Legion Post
The American Legion Garrison of Walworth County will hold ceremonies across the region Saturday to honor the sacrifices of veterans across the country. Commemorative ceremonies will be held at various locations across the county starting at 11 a.m. Delavan Police Department and Sharon Police Department will activate emergency sirens. Church bells will be ringing in Lake Geneva and other areas.
Milwaukee County Ground Cemetery Descendant Community
On Veterans Day, the organization will hold a veteran headstone recognition and dedication event at 11 a.m. at Milwaukee County Ground Park Cemetery 3 (north of Watertown Plank Road, end of 87th Street). Rededication is performed by historical reenactors. The ceremony is scheduled to last 90 minutes. Organizers are asking participants to bring their own lawn chairs and say the event will take place regardless of the weather. There are no toilets on site.
The City of Hartford and the Village of Slinger will sound sirens at 11 a.m. Saturday to honor veterans.
The Veterans Affairs Center’s 5th Annual Veterans Ball will be held Saturday at the Italian Community Center in Milwaukee. VIP registration begins at 5 p.m., general registration begins at 6 p.m., followed by dinner, program and afterparty. Ticket information and prices can be found on the event website.
