Filmmaker Karaoke with Jodi Stillwater
Cinema is a collective of Bay Area filmmakers co-founded by Boots Riley, Laura Wagner, George Rush, Cheryl Dany, and Karina Hodoyan. The group has hosted events that foster Auckland’s filmmaking community and showcase films by local directors. Networking events are held at various venues and are designed for up-and-coming and veteran filmmakers to meet each other. This Wednesday, writer, director, and producer Jodie Stillwater will be hosting a karaoke night in collaboration with CinemaMama. The event is free. All you need to do is RSVP online.

THROUGHLINE: Art and Culinary Experience
Taylor Smalls, Brandon Ruffin, Michael Wayne Turner III, and Mara Hruby, five local artists from the Last Supper Society will use their talents in photography, painting, poetry, singing, and culinary arts to help identify women. The event will honor those who are champions of change. Designer Shelley McMullen, film director Neema Jordan, singer-songwriter Goapel, and more. The interdisciplinary show, which includes food and drink, culminates in immersive interpretations of the winners by all five artists.

Film screening of Misty Copeland’s “Flower” with dance performance and panel talk
In September, world-renowned ballet dancer Misty Copeland premiered the silent film Flower at the Paramount Theatre. The film, which she starred in and co-produced, tells the story of Rose, a dancer who must put her dreams on hold to care for her mother, Gloria (Christina Johnson), who suffers from dementia. As Rose struggles to pay his bills, he realizes that his Oakland neighborhood, like his mother’s memories, is rapidly disappearing. Her fellow dancer Starling (Baba Tunji Johnson) helps her understand her resilience and the power of community. The film will be screened again this weekend at OMCA’s James Moore Theater, after which it will be hosted by Oaklandside housing reporter Natalie Orenstein, who will talk about Johnson and the local community who is currently directing a documentary about Oakland’s largest homeless encampment. A conversation will be held with filmmaker and journalist Caron Clayton. .

Piedmont Gardens 7th Annual Jewelry Sale
Since 2017, the resident committee of Piedmont Gardens, a senior living community, has organized an annual jewelry sale. Residents make donations, help sort and price items before the event, and volunteer on the day of the sale. There are two rooms, one for jewelry under $25 and one for more expensive items. You’ll find everything from necklaces to earrings, pins, pendants, rings, bracelets, watches, beads for jewelry makers, and items for men and children. Some residents have jewelry makers who donate custom pieces, but most of the jewelry comes from residents’ personal collections. As it will be held at a senior living facility, proof of vaccination and a mask will be required.

Guns to Gardens
Oakland Police Department, St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Oakland, Mount Zion Baptist Church in Oakland, and other community organizations are teaming up to hold a Guns to Gardens gun buy event at Mount Zion Baptist Church this Saturday. will be held. Community members can trade their guns for gardening tools or gift cards worth up to $300 depending on the type of firearm submitted. This event is held to promote safer and greener communities. Additionally, $5 for every gun submitted will be donated to Mount Zion’s programs to feed the unhoused.
